Rolls / Shorter Notes
In the basic notation, each symbol represents a single pulse. However, when symbols are enclosed in numbers, they indicate a roll. In a roll, the total duration of all enclosed symbols is equal to the enclosing number's value.
Examples
Simple Pattern:
The pattern oxxx consists of one tone (o) followed by three slaps (xxx), with each symbol representing one pulse (totaling four pulses).
Rolled Pattern:
The pattern 1oo1xx represents a subdivision:
• The oo (two tones) are each played at half a pulse (since together they fit into one pulse).
• The xx (two slaps) are played at one pulse each.
Thus, the total duration is three pulses: one pulse for the rolled tones plus two pulses for the slaps.
Tip:
Think of the numbers as "containers" that adjust the duration of the enclosed symbols. The total time for those symbols is spread evenly to fit within the specified number of pulses.
